I wanted to reach out to gather some input specifically, I’m curious if any of you have an emergency organizational chart in place, and if so, where you typically place the position of Risk Manager within it.
Given that this position is relatively new to our district, we want to ensure that we integrate it effectively into our emergency protocols. Understanding where others have placed their Risk Manager within their organizational structure could provide valuable insights as we finalize our emergency information.
If you have any thoughts, suggestions, or examples to share, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your input will greatly contribute to our efforts to enhance our emergency preparedness.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.March 20, 2024 at 12:16 pm #44433Stephen BucheliParticipantChristine,
Are you looking for where the risk manager fits into a District level EOC? Wasn’t quite sure what “emergency organizational chart” meant. Feel free to email me directly at StephenBayne@iusd.org.-Stephen (Irvine Unified School District)

Emergency response roles are not typically assigned via title or management position, but by the tasks that need to be completed. Emergency response protocols should be revisited regularly to fill/revise roles as people add/leave or obtain new skills. Many Risk Managers have different responsibilities (e.g. Workers Comp, Benefits, compliance, site safety planning, employee safety to name a few). A review of your emergency protocols and individual staff skillsets will help determine who can fill the roles. In my prior district, I worked with Site Admin to help determine who would be responsible for response actions/communications based on the skills needed to fulfill Site Safety Team member positions. That often includes a mix of positions including Custodian, P.E.Teacher/Coach, yard duty, Office Assistant, etc. At a District Office, people were assigned duties per location and ability to carry out tasks. Emergency response is not necessarily tied to org chart roles.
I hope this is a helpful perspective. If you would like to discuss, contact me at jserran@sia-jpa.org.
