ParticipantAre any districts allowing/using classified employees to Chaperone field trips in lieu of a certificated staff member? (Referring to AR 6153). If so, why and how do you pay them for their time?
Thank you!

ParticipantAre you asking if they can chaperone instead of certificated or in addition to the certificated staff?

ParticipantHi Colette,
I am asking in lieu of a certificated staff member and how would they be compensated? Not the best idea and seems costly.

ParticipantOur district uses classified staff as well as certificated staff who are paid a stipend if the trip is overnight. Otherwise, if the field trip is during work hours staff is paid their regular contracted hours. We also utilitze parent volunteers who are unpaid. They are fingerprinted prior to the trip.

ParticipantEd Code 353330 requires us to “Provide supervision of pupils involved in field trips or excursions by certificated employees of the district”, so we have a ratio requirement from certificated staff to student ratio for all trips. No trip can be chaperoned by classified staff alone. We add additional chaperones by using approved, fingerprinted parent volunteers and classified staff. If the field trip is outside of the duty day of our classified staff they are paid their hourly rate/overtime as required.

ParticipantThanks Colette, very helpful.
@Martin – Do you ever use ONLY classified staff if a certificated staff member is not available, and if so, how do you proceed?
